Planting Dates

There are three planting seasons for prairie reconstruction. Spring seeding begins in May after the soil has warmed up and continues until the end of June.  Fall seeding begins in mid October and continues until the ground freezes.  The third seeding window is termed "frost seeding".  This can take place anytime after the gound has frozen up to as late as mid March.  Species planted in fall or frost seedings are not supposed to germinate until the following spring. If seeds are planted outside of one of these windows, they may produce seedlings which are too small to survive the winter.
